This high-quality military art poster portrays men of the 101st Airborne Division engaging in a lightning patrol across the bitterly contested road junction - just outside the village of St Côme-du-Mont on 8 June 1944.
Historical Context:
The crossing at St Côme-du-Mont in Normandy gained historical significance during World War 2 due to its association with the Battle of Carentan in June 1944. Here, the men of the 6th German PIR, nicknamed the Green Devils, fought fiercely for three days against the American paratroopers of the 101st, through intense house-to-house combat. On June 8, as the Germans withdrew to Carentan the American Colonel “Iron Mike” Michaelis established the headquarters of his unit, the 502nd PIR of the 101st Airborne.

About the artist
Simon Smith
Simon Smith was born in 1960 into a military family and quickly developed an interest in history and the armed forces. Always a talented artist, he studied Fine Art and Illustration at Art School and, graduating with a First-class degree, worked as a highly successful commercial illustrator. Equally at home painting in traditional oils and using the technologies of digital creation, his pieces are often created using a combination of both processes.
Simon has won numerous awards including the Fine Art Trade Guild’s ‘Nockold’s Trophy’, the Cross and Cockade WW1 ‘Aviation Art Award’, and Flypast magazine’s award for ‘Excellence in Aviation Art’.
