This high-quality military art poster by Simon Smith dramatically portrays the assault on Omaha beach on D-Day, 6th June 1944.

Historical Context:

The largest of the D-Day assault areas, Omaha Beach stretched over 10 km (6 miles) between the fishing port of Port-en-Bessin and the mouth of the Vire River, with the primary objective linking with the British landings at Gold to the east, and reaching the area of Isigny to the west to link up with VII Corps landing at Utah.

Charging into a blizzard of unyielding machine-gun and mortar fire, elements of the 29th Infantry Division lead the assault on Omaha Beach on 6 June 1944. The scene at the water’s edge quickly becomes one of chaos and bloody carnage as the heavily laden troops begin the 200 yard rush across the bullet-swept sands of what would later be known as ‘Bloody’ Omaha. Opposing the landings was the German 352nd Infantry Division, which of its 12,020 men, 6,800 were experienced combat troops, who held the U.S. troops under intense fire causing substantial casualties. However by the end of the day two small isolated footholds had been won, from which they would continue to push their objectives.
